Description: Creation (Haydn)

The Creation - Josef Haydn

Inspired by Handel's successful oratorios in the UK, Haydn composed The Creation in 1797, depicting the epic topic of the creation of the world, as recorded in Genesis, with additions from the Psalms and Milton's Paradise Lost

The first part of the work begins with a slightly sinister represenation of chaos and disorder, leading into the six days of creation, which extends into the second part. The third section concerns the story of Adam and Eve, and ends with their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

The Creation is a joyful and exuberant work, celebrating the creativity and love of God.. It remains a justly popular work in the choral repertoire.

This is the Society's first performance under the baton of our new Music Director, Charlie Murray.
